International Network Towards Smoke-Free Hospitals
|
International Network Towards Smoke-Free Hospitals, headquartered
in England, U.K., now working in 72 countries, started its international
network following the initial smoke-free hosptal world wide leadership
in the USA.
The world smoke-free effort had many early supporters. However, the
world's first totally 100% smoke-free hospital achievement came in
1983 at the Keams Canyon Arizona PHS Indian Hospital. This hospital,
on the Hopi Indian Reservation, served both Hopi and Navajo patients.
This early collaborative Indian Health Service and Native American
Reservation Community Hospital leadership soon spread to all Native
American Indian Reservations in America.
This then inspired U.S. Health and Human Service Secretary, Dr. Otis
Bowen, to join with 13th U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop, to
take administrative steps to make all 13,000 facilities in all 50 states
smoke-free.
